Psalm 54
God Is My Helper
He works hard. He is competent and capable. His hands are finely tuned to his craft, producing beautiful creations. He can envision and build almost anything his imagination conceives.
Yet even the most skilled craftsman occasionally needs another pair of hands. Sometimes the task exceeds the available time. Other times he needs someone to hold a piece steady while he works on a different section. On rare occasions, the project is simply too large for one person to complete alone.
He needs help.
Sadly, many people view the need for help as a sign of weakness. This reveals a misunderstanding of the word itself. “Help” simply means assistance or support given to another — providing what is useful or necessary to accomplish a goal. Pride and arrogance often keep us from receiving the help we need.
In Psalm 54, David openly acknowledges his need for help. He declares: “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is with those who uphold my life” (v. 4).
At this point in his life, David was not yet king. He had been anointed, but Saul was hunting him relentlessly. With few friends and little safety, David hid with his men in the wilderness of Ziph. Local inhabitants betrayed his location to Saul, forcing him to flee once again.
In the midst of danger and betrayal, David cried out to God and acknowledged Him as his helper. His problems did not instantly disappear. He remained on the run and continued to face treachery. Yet he was not alone. He knew God would sustain him, provide help along the way, and care for him at every turn.
We must not reject the help God offers. Our adversary’s greatest strategy is to isolate us. He knows that if he can keep us fighting alone, he will eventually win — because isolation kills.
Whether we face sin, health challenges, financial struggles, difficult decisions, or even everyday tasks, help is available. The hardest part is often admitting we need it and then accepting it. When we seek God, we will find Him. When we turn to the right Source, help will come.
Are we living in such a way that we can confidently say with David, “The Lord is my helper”?
God will not do everything for us — we must still put our hands and hearts to the task. But He is more than able to make up for whatever we lack.
