Psalm 56
The Ledger
She keeps meticulous records. Every purchase, every expense, and every mile traveled is logged to the penny. Nothing escapes her ledger. Her attention to detail has made her invaluable to her employer. She catches what others miss, and her careful records have saved others from disaster more than once.
While some may quietly chuckle at her precision, they are quick to thank her when that same precision protects them.
As a professional bookkeeper, I may be biased toward the woman mentioned above — but it is this kind of meticulous care that David highlights in Psalm 56.
In David’s life, the ledger is not financial. It is the record God keeps of every trial, every hardship, and every tear His people endure. David writes:
“You have kept count of my tossings;
put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your book?
Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call.
This I know, that God is for me.”
(vv. 8–9)
David composed this psalm while surrounded by enemies who sought his life. Yet in the midst of constant danger, he focuses on God’s gracious care. He found deep comfort in knowing that God saw everything — not just his sins, but his suffering, his wanderings, and his tears.
We often emphasize God’s omniscience in relation to our wrongdoing. We picture His “all-seeing eye” as one that never misses our failures. We insist that He will not turn a blind eye to sin, and that is true. But there is another, equally powerful side to His all-knowing presence: it is impossible to hide our pain and tears from Him.
Even when we conceal our hurt from friends and family, we cannot hide it from God. He sees every step we take — whether fleeing danger or simply trying to survive. He notices every sorrow and grief. David even pictures God tenderly storing each tear in His bottle.
God’s ledger records far more than our good and bad deeds. He cares deeply about who we are, what we endure, and every twist and turn of our lives.
This is why David ends the psalm with confident praise:
“I must perform my vows to you, O God;
I will render thank offerings to you.
For you have delivered my soul from death,
yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God in the light of life.”
(vv. 12–13)
Remember: Nobody is forgotten in God’s ledger. He sees you. He cares for you. He loves you.
